The Department of Earth Sciences (Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra) was established in 1977 and strives to coordinate and promote research in the field of earth sciences. The department is divided into five sections and is staffed by 36 tenured academic staff, 16 technical and administrative staff and about 40 researchers such as doctoral or other scholarship students.
Current research touches practically every aspect of the Earth Sciences. Research is financed by the The Ministry of Education (MIUR), various public research institutions, Regional Agencies and private Companies.
The Department promotes courses, conferences and workshops, besides providing laboratory analysis and field tests for all the most important areas of Earth Sciences.
The Department's academic staff are involved in teaching more than 60 subjects in 8 different degree courses offered by the University of Perugia.
The Department hosts the following degree and PhD courses:
- undergraduate degree course in "Geology" (three years)
- post-graduate degree course in "Geological Risks and Resources" (two years)
- post-graduate degree course in "Hydrocarbon Geology" (two years)
- PhD course in Earth "Sciences and Geotechnologies"
